Alta Audio
Alta Audio are one of hi-fi’s best kept secrets but not for much longer! Michael Levy is a speaker designer who “thinks outside the box” and has designed a remarkable hybrid transmission line/ported system that means all of his speakers deliver a full range listening experience. The Atoll Electronique Company was founded in September 1997 by 2 brothers: Stéphane & Emmanuel Dubreuil. Right from the start the philosophy was to address a lack in the market: no reasonably priced true high-end audio electronics for budget-conscious audiophiles.
Their whole range is designed, tested and manufactured in Normandy, France. They have quietly built up a large range of different components over the last few years and are now garnering much international notice.

“Little Fwend” Tonearm Lifter
The “Little Fwend” Tonearm lifter has one job to do and it does it beautifully, smoothly and gently and will do this for years and will look good doing it!
You drift off to sleep, you pop out of the room, you get THAT phone call and you can now do all this safe in the knowledge that the record you are playing will keep spinning round but your tonearm and your cartridge will gently lift off at the end of the LP.
There are a High version and a Low version and a new Disco version specifically designed for the Technics 1210/1200
It is very delicate and precise, and it operates like a precision instrument.
Little Fwend:
The lifting Mechanism: Safe. Smooth. Silent. Those were the most important aspects of the design. We experimented a lot finding the right relationship between spring compression force, travel, dampening and friction. Little Fwend lifts the tonearm smoothly and controlled with minimum use of force (and a little help from Newtons fwends). Little Fwend can lift tonearms with cartridges set up to 5 grams VTF.
Release Antenna: High carbon steel Roslau piano wire. Very low lateral force is required to release the mechanism.
Rubber Beam: Neoprene rubber padding lets the tonearm rest safely and stable even with the level a few degrees off both horizontally and vertically.
U-SPIN revolving Record Storage System
I have designed and manufactured the U-Spin; a fantastic revolving record storage system manufactured from great looking, strong 20mm bamboo panels. Sanded and oiled to a silky finish.
This is great news for folk with large collections and to save covering all your walls with record storage shelves.
The U-Spin is only 680mm (27 inches) square at the base. Each storage bay hold approximately 65 LP’s. A 5-layer high unit stands 1830mm high and will store approximately 1300 LP’s. A heavy duty mechanism means it revolves easily.
The units are purchased per layer and can be assembled up to 5 layers high. This size will have a weight of about 400kg (880 pounds) so make sure it is placed in a suitable spot.
They can be transported flat-packed and assembled in under an hour.
Tui Record Browser
Introducing the new TUI Record Browser. Finally a record storage option that is as attractive to look at as it is useful
It has been designed and manufactured by Soul to Sole Audio here in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.
It holds up to 100 LP’s, though that would be quite tight for browsing. Around 80 albums for good “flickability”
Units are made from 20mm hand-oiled bamboo panels. They oil up to a lovely golden colour
It is cleverly designed with “tongue and groove” tabs and “cam” locking systems. It is sent flat packed and easily assembled in about 10 minutes and is very strong when completed.
It is slim and elegant looking . The bamboo edge looks great compared to “normal” ply. It is a more expensive material but you end up with a much nicer looking product.
Narrow enough to fit in a small space and also designed to be expandable with single units bolting together to make as long a unit as you desire. Each TUI will come with connecting bolts and tools for expansion if desired.
It has been designed and built as an attractive record storage solution that will fit into a living room situation without looking out of place. A “tick of approval” from others in the home hopefully…:-)

DS Audio Optical Phono Cartridges
DS Audio are manufacturing an extraordinary range of optical cartridges that are taking the vinyl playback world by storm. Digital Stream Corporation invented the optical mouse alongside Microsoft and have put their intensive knowledge into making, what some reviewers are saying, are the finest phono cartridges in the world.
Here’s how the DS Audio Cartridges work: The cartridge uses a light source (a miniature LED) that is powered by the included equalizer/power supply (which replaces your phonostage) via the tonearm cables and internal tonearm wiring. The record-groove vibrations transmitted by the stylus/cantilever modulates this LED light via a moving screen, and the modulated light is picked up by a photoelectric sensor. This photodiode converts the light into an electrical signal, sending it back through the tonearm cabling to the equalizer/power supply unit, which amplifies the signal into a RIAA-equalized line-level output. There is nothing digital about the DS Audio Optical Cartridges. They are entirely analog devices.
The brand new DS-E1 cartridge and equalizer have arrived at a much more affordable price of $4995. This price includes the phonostage so this is a highly competitive product in the realm of high quality vinyl playback.
The reviews of this new DS-E1 model are fantastic and it is very exciting to have it available in New Zealand.
